I love your names! It’s so interesting to see other people’s lives/classifications. It’s very different to mine, but I get it, I reckon could find my way around. I’d probably go and check out ‘Tapes’ first. ![]()

I’ve got a minor dilemma. After completing the three sorts from Area 30-39, I ended up with these rough categories:
These categories initially felt like they were apart of two distinct areas, Personal and Professional. But then it dawned on me that all of these categories might be apart of the same area, Personal. So I’m wondering whether there are pros and cons to either of the following approaches:
Everything in one category:
Categories split into two areas:
This Waypoint plugin is awesome I will definitely be using that for my vault, thanks!
I agree it’s great! Make sure to check out the Landmark feature as well as the Waypoint bit
Oh they are some pretty diagrams.
I’m torn here. Part of me says keep them as one area, because then a potential decision — which area are they in? — is removed. Generally I think this is a win.
But then you’d come close to filling up that area, and I do like to leave a bit of room. So that would be the argument to split them out.
I think this one is 50/50. I like the very clear, simple Personal and Professional area titles.
Do you know the old ‘flip a coin and if your brain doesn’t like the result then you know what you really wanted’ trick? Maybe try that?
Is there a way to configure the Indices such that the files don’t have to be named the same thing as the parent folder? It’d be nice to retain the ACID IDs (11.00 Index, 12.00 Index, etc.)
I decided to go with the second approach because although my system is pretty small at the moment, I can see it growing in the future now that I will have a system in place. However, I needed to split the Writing category up to account for personal and professional writing, and I realized I needed to elevate Portfolio Projects to its own category:
I’m not sure - I don’t believe there is, currently. But I’ve not read all of the docs in detail. I know what you mean about the AC.00 thing but I’ve made my peace with it ![]()
I built my structure in Finder. Typically DevonThink has housed all these things. What I have found though is I like the ubiquity of iCloud sync, and knowing it’s all the same on whatever device. DevonThink has sync, but it’s confusing and clunky. And the mobile apps are horrible.
I do miss out on some nice stuff like replicants and various preview panes, but I think I’m okay with it.
As a compromise I am trialling the Index feature of DT again. It never worked for me in the past, but maybe this time it will give me the best of both worlds.
I’ve become brain-twisted. I’m using the standard zeros. Does that mean “my” numbers can start at xx.10 or xx.11?
I think I’ve figured it out from the Susan example - start at xx.11.
Right you are. ![]()
I’ve finished all the videos. Both @johnnydecimal and @LucyDecimal have done an incredible job with the scripting, filming, editing… Thank you!
Oh the index ones are up? Super thank you!
A super special request please
I’m about to start re-writing and possibly merging the pages for the JD workshop/workbook. And we’ll be putting together a promo video with all the ‘nice bits’ from the workshop.
Some nice words from people who’ve done the workshop would really help.
We all know how important reviews are. I’ve got some lovely quotes for the workbook already (see the page), and it’d be amazing to get something similar for the workshop.
If you can be bothered – and if you have anything nice to say! ha ha – a submission to the Airtable form is the easiest way. This way it can be anonymous if you like.
Thanks in advance. xo
I just finished Area 50-59 and am already feeling more organized and productive! Thank you @johnnydecimal and @LucyDecimal this workshop has been absolutely great. Looking forward to Area 60-69!
I can’t believe some people have finished. I feel warm feelings about these achievements. ![]()
I’m looking forward to having time to finish my index. And then taking it for a spin/getting used to it in daily life.
I’ve removed other apps from my dock so there’s only Apple Notes, to remind me to start ‘work’ in my index. ![]()
This is how my index had ended up. How can a whole life be reduced to such a small number of categories? ![]()
