I’m on vacation and started using JD LAS and my existing files and notes clean up nicely - except from the Family vs. People part.
I started out with copying 11.* for every person using 16-19, but that isn’t generalisable and I feel it might hurt future compatibility with the LAS.
I kept 11.ID and reduced it in our folder to the things really relevant for us as a family, but many things are missing. I’ve seen a few mentions of things like daycare where it’s a bit of an interesting case because there are institutions we interact with sometimes from an individual or group perspective. I think using a mixture of +PERSON ids (e.g. income from me and my wife keeping it in the big money category) and one personal category ends up with a reasonably well balanced structure.
At the moment I’m strongly tempted to create + suffixes in the AC part of the ID. However, I haven’t seen this before and the specs do not indicate this (and it would hurt the “at most 10 things” at this level part). This would help to a) keep in line with the “Me”-perspective of the 11.ID thus looking up IDs when having “11+ME.10” in hand, you know to look up “11.10”. This would remain compatibility with future updates to this numbering scheme. This likely also makes it easier to hand over things to the kids for their own systems in the future (if that should happen).
This would free up 16-19 again and I’d start introducing a fresh, empty category there. I’d also suggest to consider explicitly starting a new “Family” category and organise that one as a standardised category in the LAS. Maybe just allocate the number so everyone working on a family system can experiment within this space with the notice of maybe integrating common IDs later, together, in the standard … ?
One thing I’ll add to the family category immediately will be those things that require personal and group-based perspectives, like “16.ID Daycare” and “16.ID+KID" Daycare”. Those categories typically aren’t needed by the kids once they take over their folder in the future.
I toyed around with 11+KID and noticed that the subfolders will be all noisy with the +KID extension, making it hard to read out the 11.53 becoming “11+KID.53”. In my personal case I have a few things using the + extension already which then becomes “11+CHR.52+ something” … which triggers me from an aesthetic and cognitive perspective. Back to the drawing board, I guess.
I guess I’m kinda live-blogging my experiments now …
The “16 Our Family” category (as cloned initially from 11) doesn’t seem to need the .20 Health stuff. I’ve added “16.2X Support systems” with “16.21 Daycare” (and 16.21+KID).
The other downside I see from everyone using an “11” is that the index / note keeping becomes crowded/convoluted. But then again, everyone using the same obsidian vault for his/her personal notes also doesn’t make sense.
I haven’t looked at the small business system yet (will do when I come back to check using JDS for my company) - is there something in there regarding notes embedded in the jdex vs. personal notes?
However - this clutters everything A LOT. I’m unsure how to split this per person on the category level now. I’d like the IDs to stay the same so everyone can use the links to the standard IDs to look up stuff…
Also I noted that everyone might want to keep their notes separate, so not a single big Obsidian instance.
