The next QS pack we’ll do will surely be ‘small business’. So can we brain dump ideas here please, that’ll help us shape it when the time comes.
I imagine it being a similar thing to the life admin (LA) pack: it’s all of the basics that everyone needs, and none of the custom stuff. So you should be able to use it as the foundation for pretty much any small business.
What’s ‘small’? Anything up to you employing about 20 people, perhaps?
And our first idea saw this taking the same basic shape as life admin. This is all very draft, first thoughts, v0.1 etc., so please feel free to pick this apart.
11 The business keeps your basic records. Setting the thing up, registrations, foundational stuff. Employing staff/contractors.
Analogous to 11 Me in LA.
12 Where we work is how you have an office, contracts (phone, internet), all that sort of stuff. Basic overheads of existing as a business.
≈ 12 Where I live…
Finance. Doing your books. Quarterly/annual returns.
≈ 13 Money
Technology. Managing it all.
≈ 14 Online
Marketing & PR
≈ 15 Events & fun
Somewhere in there we’ll fit sales, tracking of.
So that’s the really obvious stuff. More more more! Fill this thread up with ideas.
Woohoo! I am really excited for this. I do believe this new approach you are taking and the life admin packs will really help JD take off. I could see JD taking over the productivity space. It does tick all of the boxes! Affordability - check. Ease of access - check. Creator active with their audience - check. A template set up that does a majority of the head work for you whilst saving time - check. It’s not complicated - check.
I appreciate how you take comments on board and recognise the need and deliver. It seems like you are working really really hard to meet customer demands and take us seriously and I really do appreciate how active you are in the community forum. And not tons of yucky sale pitches (of course I understand you need to earn an income, but I see that this isn’t at the expense of overcharging your customers and underdelivering. I hate these content creators who want to make money fast and fear monger and underdeliver. Take too many shortcuts. Produce lazy minimal work. You are really hardworking @johnnydecimal and @LucyDecimal
I have just shared JD with some online friends. I truly believe in this system and both of you @johnnydecimal and @LucyDecimal
I did take a gamble putting money in pre course launch which usually isn’t like me. I’ll usually follow somebody on all platforms for about about a year and extensively check what Redditor’s are saying about content creators before paying for anything to check they are legit but I really trusted in this and was excited for it. Very very glad I took a gamble. JD was an accidental find on Reddit while reading about the downfalls of another system and I was curious! After an hour on the site I took the plunge .
Anyway, back to what you asked … I don’t have the brain power right now to think, which is why I am excited to pay you to do it for me … will see how my brain functions tomorrow!!! I get approx 4 hours sleep a night thanks to my disabled daughter. I need to DM you something I discovered when I have brain power. I am wiped for thinking today.
So thankful for this system, you guys and this community forum.
Wow! What kind words. I did actually cry a little bit, in a good way.
Just for that you get a free chicken photo. This is from yesterday’s progress meeting of the JD website refresh team - we’re all a bit goggle-eyed, but we’re getting close to being done.
Correct. As well as their defined roles, they oversee the usual big picture stuff. Global strategy, stockholder finance reports, governance and auditing, and they chair the annual board meetings. As such a small business we’re lucky to be able to draw on their expertise. And they work for chicken feed.
Ohhh that’s a shame I sent you a PM on slack of what I’ve been doing so far and how I am struggling with the subfolders. Would be good to see what you think of it so far?
I took a stab at it! I have based this work on the “Life admin” structure and renamed each item into what seemed meaningful to me, and I have added a bunch of items, not least new categories for Sales and for Products.
This is a live outline which anyone can edit! I hope it doesn’t get mangled by evil trolls, but until that happens I feel it could be useful as a cooperative resource:
This is really cool it’s so interesting to see other people’s systems/ideas! I am currently having a shot at setting up my work system JD style but want to keep subfolders two levels deep which I’m finding quite a challenge.
I found it relatively easy to make a work structure that is aligned with the AC.ID pattern, because “work” is such a narrow scope that it’s possible to fit anything into 10×10 boxes. (Daily life is much more faceted, and that’s really hard.)
@torbengb this is how my system is going so far. I am focusing on the finances and accounting at the moment. I sent it to @johnnydecimal and he thinks that my VAT folder is doing more than holding VAT. I do agree with this statement. But can’t find a way around this at the moment. I only really want 3 sub-folders.
Niiiiice! You read our minds: our intent is to take the LA structure and just pretend the human was a company. It feels like it provides a good framework yeah?
On the iPad now, I’ll take a proper look at this later. Thanks so much.
