Hi everyone, I am continuing to collect data in my personal JD.
I didn’t have any feedback, but today I received 2 documents for my house and my brain immediately answered “oh that’s about 13.31 Mortgage”. Very good feeling.
I am planning to start using this at work too. The problem I have is that at work, the company has its own GDrive and I’d like to use it.
I have already a “20-29 Work” in my personal JD, because I’d like to keep the contract and other personal stuff that I created for my job in my personal JD: they might be useful in future jobs.
So I do not want to use “20-29 Work” also for the company stuff.
To allow the sync, I am wondering if a good approach is to:
create another JD just for the company
create an Area that is completely independent for the company. Like “30-39 Company Name”
Use the single JDex that I have and use the Location to say “Company Google Drive”
In this way I should be able to keep the same JDex, but leverage on multiple Google Drive and my brain will know that 3x.xx is something I’ll find probably on the company google drive.
What do you think?
This feels like you as a human who has a job is quite separate from that job and all the stuff it contains. Which is the normal situation if you have what we call ‘a job’ and you’re not self employed, a freelancer, etc.
I’d keep the systems separate. They have nothing to do with each other. You shouldn’t be bringing the job stuff home, right? The company’s Google Drive won’t be on your home computer? This is better for many reasons, security and privacy being the first.
This is what I did for many years. Johnny Noble had his system, including the contract he signed so he could work at Big Corp Inc. Then he went to work at Big Corp Inc. and built a totally different system there. The two never mixed.
Thanks Johnny. Thinking deeply on the problem I think you are absolutely right.
One question: in these cases, do you manage 2 different JDex, right? I assumed that because you are talking about keeping work “[…] in his system”.
I am asking this, because I actually use one single vault in Obsidian, both for notes about my stuff and notes about work…
Yeah I’d have 2 separate vaults for this. If nothing else this will reinforce the healthy mental distinction between you, as a human, and your job.
Just be careful if you’re keeping job stuff on your own computer. There are of course situations where this is fine, but as a rule if you have a work-issued computer and work-issued logins, that’s where all of your work-issued knowledge should be, including your work JDex.
