I’ve been totally immersed in the JD world for only about a week, but in that time I’ve read the website, scoured the forums & discord and bought and worked my way through the workshop.
I know that there are parts of the process that I should take longer doing, such as discovery, but I’ve been working on that even in pre-JD days.
So, I have a rough idea of my Areas and Categories and want to share my first area to check whether I am on the right track (Life Admin will come later).
The first area is one I’ve loosely called “Music & Media”. I have a big interest in music and a big collection of various media. I also play a bit of guitar and dabble with computer-based music. One topic I forced in here is related to design elements like fonts, clipart, etc. I might change the title to something more generic, like “ The Arts” or something but not sure at this point. I didn’t want to refer to them as hobbies as my main hobby is Genealogy, which will have its own area.
So here is my first draft. I would welcome any thoughts, and suggestions for improvement.
In Cat 21 where would things like chord fingerings and scale pattern diagrams go?
Are 22.16 and 22.50 duplicates?
I’ve not considered subdividing a Category in the way that you have (this might be the “headers” I keep hearing about). I quite like it.
I’m not sure what you’re getting at by having a JDex per category at XX.00 - the JDex is one big index for the whole system. Unless you mean an explanation of what’s in the category?
I’d have put them under 22.14 Guitar Tabs. I suppose I could extend the description to something like Guitar Tab, Scales & Chord Charts.
Yes & No. This is one of the areas I struggled the most. I have tons of Video Tutorials on all kinds of topics, Guitar, Photoshop, Computer Music, etc. I could have something under 21.31 that’s an umbrella Video Tutorials category (and I think this is what Johnny recommends), but it feels odd when the guitar-related stuff isn’t together or the Tech stuff, which I’ve currently put under a Life Admin equivalent.
Yes, these are the Headers that I’ve seen used by Johnny and others, though I might need to re-format them. Johnny uses a ■ in front of his in the LAS.
It’s essentially a condensed index of what’s in the category. This is how it’s described as being done in the workshop, and the LAS contains these for each category too.
Great start! Definitely sit on it for a week or so, try to find edge-cases, try to break your own thing. That’ll show the gaps. But it feels good.
In defence of the MiniDisc, a format that I loved, I’ll point out its spelling error at 21.16. I had a handful of portable players and a beautiful Sony deck similar to the one in the article. It always felt like a really sturdy format.
Thanks! I will keep testing it. I’m also close with my first draft of my other two areas of “Life OS” & “Genealogy” which I might share in different topics to focus on them, and will sit on them also.
Thanks for catching my spelling error for the MiniDisc. I thought it was a good format too. Mine is still sat about 10 feet from me with all my other hi-fi , though hasn’t seen any action in a while.
