This is a big one! Worthy of its own thread for easier support/follow-up.
It was a good read. You were right I did get a little sleepy but I mustered on.
After reading I looked at what I was doing and I have been using the 3-2-1 method without knowing it and doing a restore point too. Every night my computer automatically updates everything but the Home folder. Then at the end of the night I manually backup the Home folder and sync a copy to the cloud.
Strangely enough, I’m usually worried about my data. But I guess I don’t really have to be. Anyways thanks for the great article.
Very important topic, definitely worth a video series ![]()
You do a manual backup every(/most) night?! Nice.
You sound pretty safe. So here’s a challenge. Ooh maybe I’ll make this a follow-up post.
- Think of an important file,
- that you haven’t touched in at least a few months.
- Now pretend there was some disaster in December that you didn’t notice,
- and restore a copy of that file from November.
I dunno if that’s useful. Let me know how that works for you.
I think its a good challenge. I can think of a few off the top of my head and I realize that either a) I’m not sure I know whether they are well backed up, or b) they are, but the process of retrieving feels rough.
This is a big one indeed. I think it may be worth more than a thread. A backup strategy/philosophy walk through could be as useful as your Task & Project Management course. I’ve come up with various convoluted plans over the years. I now have what I thought was a really robust system but I honestly don’t know.
Yeah I think a short video series would be useful. Will add to the list!
I love the direction your work is taking. The JD system and Index, are really just the foundational skills/habits for living the digitally integrated lives that we’ve all been thrust into. With the JD structure to shape and guide the process, I couldn’t believe how much more manageable my task/project management have been. The same is true for my accounting. (I would wholeheartedly recommend that everyone integrate JD-ID’s into finance software for coding transactions!) I’m looking forward to applying these skills to so many other facets of my life.
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner.
I don’t think I could find a file version from November. It would be updated for whenever I saved it last. I don’t keep multiple versions of the same file.
Either that’s what you were talking about or something else. My brain can’t think of any other way.
Your backup software should be doing this for you.
This is for the case where you make some accidental edit, or some corruption occurs, and you don’t realise for months. It’s unlikely, but happens. Ideally, you can go back in time and fetch a version from, say, November.
In my personal life I don’t think I’ve had that problem. I can see where that would be useful in business. But my personal life isn’t that complex.
