22.00.0074: YouTube: Focus and productivity series

For those of you not subscribed[1] to the channel, we put up the first in a new series of videos yesterday.

Focus and productivity’ will be about how I use my system to stay focused myself. The first round of videos will explain how I’m using Timery’s widgets, Live Activities, Apple’s Focus modes, with Shortcuts tying everything together, to stay focused.

If that sounds complex it’s because it is, a bit. But once set up, it works. Basically I tell myself, via a timer which is displayed as a widget, what it is that I want to be doing.

Am I writing this blog post? Creating the video series? Spending time on my forum or Discord?

Or am I not at work? Should I be with the chickens Lucy? Should I be offline entirely?

The problem

There was a day when I was working, and I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and an hour later I swear I was at the shops or something and I thought, wait … what am I doing here?

Many of us know the problem of distraction; of trying to stay focused on this thing. Your computer makes it positively easy to do something else. So this is me trying to build a habit; trying to be better at doing this thing until I decide it’s time to stop.

The ‘solution’

Heavy air-quotes there. So far this is really helping, but there’s a ways to go.

I’m using Apple’s Live Activities, which are basically widgets everywhere – including on your lock screen – along with Timery, to always display a running timer on all of my devices.

That timer tells me what I should be doing. Basically that’s it. So now when I wander off to the shop, as I pick up my phone on the way out the door I see that widget and think, wait a minute.

At my desk, I’ve got a spare iPhone suspended on a microphone boom arm above my monitor.[2] It’s pretty cool! So I’ve got this floating display, as well as a widget on my Desktop, always reminding me: do this.

Exploring this topic

I’ll show this setup in detail, and the rest of this series will address the topic of focus and productivity more broadly. We’re aiming to put out a video a week.

I hope you like them and, as always, let us know what you think and what else you’d like to see.

The video

  1. Shame on you! Subscribe and get me to 1,000 followers please. ↩︎

  2. It’s the phone we use to shoot video; it’s too precious (and enormous) to ever leave the house. My iPhone is a 12 mini. ↩︎

Hey @johnnydecimal,

Thanks for sharing this video and congrats on launching the channel.

Normally I skim over the updates (which I get via RSS) but I saw the photo of your boom-mounted iPhone with Timery and you might be interested to know that TickTick also supports this feature.

It contains a focus tab which lets you either do Pomodoros or run a Stopwatch which can be set as a live activity that syncs across all of your devices. I’ve attached some screenshots to demonstrate. You can also read more about the feature here.

It would be nice if there were larger home screen widgets but anyway, it reminded me that this feature exists and I should try to use it more so thanks

Cool, thanks!

I have subscribed to your channel now. I’ve downloaded the apps but it all seems so complicated lol. I will get back to it.

I do love a widget, we have 6 AirTags at present and they are widgets on my iPhone and Mac, so I can find our mobile phones and keys and bags. We actually have our keys and AirTags attached to our bags with key rings now because once we established the habit of AirTags being on keys and not losing them, we started losing our bags :woman_facepalming: adhd brains!! Somehow we never ever lose our phones unless we are at sea though :rofl::rofl::sob:

Common conversations in our house

“Ok I’ll just phone my keys/bag and I’ll be on my way”
“Mum where is my bag/keys?” “I don’t know, phone them”
“Everybody be quiet I can’t hear my bag/keys ring”
“Mum where is #insertrandomthing?” “I don’t know, maybe we will need to get an AirTag for that too”

I am fully embracing the Apple ecosystem :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Years ago … hmm 1997 maybe? … I was at my first job, as part of my degree. Me and three other lads lived in a house together and we’d all been given pagers. To get a message on the screen you used to call a number and a person answered and you read out your message! They were rad.

So one day Rob lost his. We searched high and low. He was terrified; sure he’d be fired or something. It was on silent, which did vibrate, but we couldn’t hear anything no matter what we tried.

We realised that these pagers made one single ‘chirp’ sound, very briefly, once a day. At like 10pm for some reason that makes no sense to me now.

So at 9:55pm we all spread around the house. And we hunkered down like wildlife photographers. We could all see each other; Rob at the top of the stairs, looking at me at the bottom, looking at Chris in the kitchen, looking at Neil out back.

We wait.

10:00 comes and goes. These clocks were not synchronised to GPS!

10:01.

10:02. chirp

Upstairs! It’s in the house! After much more hunting, Rob found it: in his trouser pockets, hanging in the wardrobe. He’d done the pat-down, but you know how a pocket can fold over on itself? That’s where it was.

RE video 2 focus screens … I very bravely removed all of my apps from my home screen. I am unable to add a majority of my apps though, specifically banking and Xero :frowning: the app options available are odd to me. Is there something wrong with my settings that’s not allowing me to add a majority of apps, I wonder? (I do not want a majority of the apps on focus mode, just strange I have a very limited selection?)

Adding back to your notification settings you mean, for a particular Focus mode? I’m not aware of any setting that would stop you doing that…

Yes, notifications were off. I think I have confused myself and that I need the different pages, but now I now how to focus on one at a time. I am making progress and quite happy so far. Thank you so much for sharing this, I had no idea about it and how to use it.

I should be putting out one of these a week from now on. One of these, one of the Bear series. (Hopefully. Video takes a surprisingly long time to put together…)
