11.82 hobbies

Good day All,

my apologies if this has been covered but I did search on the forum before posting but I couldn’t find any post about it.

I am, like many here I sense, a man of many hobbies. Especially reading and watchmaking.

I heard Johnny saying (I don’t remember if in the workshop or on youtube), that if your hobby gets a big portion of your life you should dedicate a… what? Area or Category? or should I simply do (I know it’s frowned upon) a subfolder for every hobby in 11.82? I’ve watched the fist video of “be better at computer” where Johnny seems to dedicate an entire Area to his hobbies, which especially for my books notes and knowledge system could seem appropriate, same for all the areas of watchmaking I keep track of, like receipts for parts, course notes, dates etc.

I would really prefer to keep everything in 11.82 I just don’t know if it’s worthwhile or I if should create a new category or area.

Good day!

If in doubt, start simple and only expand when you feel the need. So you’re okay to store stuff in 11.82 but the moment you feel like it’s disorganised in there – remember the chaos we’re trying to escape from – then realise this and start thinking about making a new place.

But as long as it works: it works!

Thanks Johnny, do you advise to create subfolders “per hobby” in 11.82? I wouldn’t know how to tell the files apart otherwise.

Totally, yep.

I’ll say it again: be careful. The moment one of those folders feels at all busy and/or messy, come back here and we’ll get you a proper category for that stuff.

Mine got crowded quite quickly and I wanted to separate by Hobby - I chose to extend the end and am currently at:

11.82 Hobbies & Learning
11.82+ Guitar
11.82+ Taekwondo
11.82+ Diving

11.82 still has stuff in it, but I’m fine with it being a grab bag. The others have more structure in them, too, but I don’t have to dive deeper that going to my sidebare favorite for 11 and then dropping down to 11.82+ …

this is intresting, thanks. Just to understand, you created subfolders named 11.82+ etc, it’s not the name of the file, right?

I think people have different approaches, but the one that has worked for me in this specific folder is:

  • in my JDex I have the note with the Extend-the-end ID but in line with the whole JDex, so similar to what Christian has above. That’s in the JDex, and it’s an ID note where I store info about the hobby
  • in my filesystem I simply have 11.82 Hobbies & learning as the folder, then underneath I have separate folders that are for each hobby or learning experience. Where it’s a course I took, I put the date

I find this works for me, since the separate notes can hold key information about the hobby, but the folders hold the coursework, or PDFs I read, or other things related.

Incidentally, I mirror my filesystem structure in my notes app for notes I take when doing the course (for example). This is NOT my JDex, but is an adjunct to the filesystem where I store longer form content notes, lecture notes etc.

I felt that the two most recent courses merited their own JDex notes because they are long and involved, the other courses in the filesystem have information in the top-level 11.82 JDex note.

As I say, my note-taking app (where I take lecture notes) mirrors the filesystem structure where it needs to - so I don’t have notes folders for all the hobbies you see in the filesystem.

So, in summary:

  • Filesystem contains files that are related to my hobbies and learning from my history - usually PDFs, or articles I’ve downloaded, or scanned handwritten notes
    • this is organised by year where appropriate, but each folder is under 11.82
  • JDex contains a flatter structure and where a hobby merits a separate note, I create an EtE note - so 11.82+ Coaching - an introduction.md. If the hobby doesn’t merit a note, I will use the top level 11.82 note. I do not create subfolders in my JDex
  • In my notes app - where I take lecture notes, or other longer form notes - I mirror the filesystem structure - so each hobby would have its own folder if I take notes on it, and this folder would be nested under the top level.

I hope that helps. It took me a long time to find the approach I was comfortable with, but this works for me.

At the end of the day, I’m sure @johnnydecimal would say that it’s about finding your stuff easily. There’s no one way to do it, but there are common approaches. Mine is just one.
