I’m still in the process of trying to sort my old filesystem into the LAS. Maybe I’m just not as diligent about record keeping, but I’m finding that I don’t have enough records in 11.11 through 11.15 to warrant a whole ID. They also have a lot of overlap, and that either their naming or their specificity actually create more ambiguity over where something should go. Maybe that’s an artifact of the American system differing from the Australian system (we can’t even get on board with the metric system
).
Items in italics are ambiguous:
11.11 Birth certificate & proof of name
- Birth certificate
- Social Security Card
- Passport (would fit here if not for 11.12)
11.12 Passports, residency, & citizenship
- Passport (1 additional file upon renewal every 10 years)
- Birth certificate (could go here if not for 11.12)
- Social Security Card
- Driver’s License
11.13 Identity cards
- Driver’s License
- Social Security Card
- Voter ID card (could go here if not for 11.15)
- Veteran ID card
11.14 Licenses
- Driver’s License
11.15 Voter registration & elections
- Voter ID card
- Maybe a voter registration form
If anyone else ran into the same thing, how did you deal with it? If you combined IDs, what number and name did you come up with?
Also, in general what do you do with the freed-up IDs if you do combine them? Leave a blank gap or shift things up?
I think I’ve seen @johnnydecimal say to go ahead and keep IDs you don’t need because you might need them later and they don’t take up any storage space. For me though, unused items are clutter that take cognitive energy to sift through every time, so I’d prefer to simplify things wherever possible.
