Would be amazing if you could share your system/thought process
I’ve seen where @Mike_Quebec started and yeah, it would! I’m fascinated to know where you landed.
To be honest, no real secret there.
I really start with the book and follow the instruction.
The end result was a really big mess. But… and a really big BUT…
DO NOT AIM FOR PERFECTION!
You won’t like it, the words, the organisation, etc. So What… it can be changed… you just don’t have to change everything all at once.
Here’s my main categories:
- 00-09 How I’m organised (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
10-19 People I care (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
20-29 Stuff I do (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
30-39 Stuff I need to do but hate doing (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
40-49 Stuff I know or need to know (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
50-59 Stuff I have (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
60-69 Stuff I want (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
70-79 Where I’m from (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
80-89 Unknown stuff (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
90-99 Old stuff (MacOS-M1/iCloud/Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox)
Between ( ) you have the location of where they are. So, it’s a link to those place. Because, yes, I have stuff on my mac, on Google Drive, dropbox or even on OneDrive for work.
Because some topics can be found everywhere I started to reserved some sub digit:
XX.20 to XX.29 are reserved for my professional work. Example:
21.00 All the stuff realated to the course IGL601
15.21 People I care - Related to my course IGL601
43.21 Legal knowledge specific to the course IGL601
These subsection are reserved everywhere for
.01 To organised.
.03 Tools, and howto
.04 Abstracts, personnal notes
.05 Training
.06 Norms and standards
I’m I done, nope! But, it is a step in the right direction… I was surprised how easy it has become to find more stuff…
Is it perfect? NO! but it is, at least so much better than before.
i have the same question @johnnydecimal.
i am creating a system for personal use in which i manage my files, health, jobs, university, youtube videos, furniture projects and a zettelkasten note system. i am not sure yet how to integrate the zettelkasten into my JD system. maybe you have a hint.
coming back to my original question: i am wondering if there is something i should consider not being in my scope? Could you give som examples for personal systems?
I’m not a Zettelkasten user, so I don’t, sorry. That feels like it just needs a single ID to contain it, though? Aren’t they essentially dated, flat text files? Have a quick search of the forum and if there’s nothing helpful, a dedicated post might be worthwhile.
I try to fit all of my personal life in to one system. So what’s not your personal life? It’s pretty much your job.
In the past, I was an IT contractor. As part of this I ran my own company. Very small, just me, but still its own formal entity.
This company was in my personal system. It was area 30-39
and had things like finance, taxes, and contracts. Because I own the company. It’s part of me.
But as an IT contractor, I go to work at some place. I get john@corporate.com email, a new login, an access badge, all that stuff. Now I’m at work. That stuff isn’t mine. Once I leave, I don’t care. And from a security perspective, it shouldn’t be integrated with my personal stuff.
So that job is clearly out of scope.
What if you don’t work? Well maybe you’re the treasurer for your local tennis club. Is that your personal life? No. The club is the club. If you move away, they’ll get another treasurer. So that should also be out of scope (although you should build them their own system).
I’ve just started a zettlekasten using notion app. I’m not sure how I will implement JD into it yet so with you on figuring it out. I guess I don’t really have a JD ID system as of yet for storing any of the information I want to store in Notion.
My set up is inspired by Elizabeth Filips notion system in this video, you could add the JD IDs to the topic names.
I am still in the process of developing my JD system. Should take a couple weeks more. As far as I understood you implemented the Zettelkasten as a category in your JD system, right? I will let you know/create a appropriate Zettelkasten post after generating more insights.
